There's a lot of debate about organic foods Vs non-organic, with many studies proving no health benefit from eating organically.   A new study(1) has found that organic eating does matter, for the following reasons;

Organic food contains higher antioxidants.

These compounds 'donate' electrons to unstable elements in the body (pro-oxidants), reducing cellular damage.   This helps reduce the risk of inflammation, subfertility(2,3), cardiac disease, neuroligical disease, cancer and premature ageing.    Studies show that antioxidants (polyphenols) are 19% - 69% higher in organic foods than non-organic foods.

Organic food contains lower levels of Cadmium

Cadmium is a metal compound found in higher levels in soils fertilised with super-phosphate fertilisers.   Cadmium easily deposits in liver and kidney tissue, causing damage to these organs, and also increases the risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer.

The good – eating apples greatly reduces cancer risk
The Bad – if you’re over 35 years old & eat apples, you have an increased risk of dental cavities!
The Ugly – Australia doesn’t regularly test the residue of pesticides used on apples

A hospital-based, case-control study published in 2005 included over 6000 participants from various regions in Italy and examined the association between fresh apple intake and risk of cancer. It was found that consuming one or more medium-sized apples (166 g)/d was associated with a reduction in risk of cancer compared to consumption of less than 1 apple per day.   Types of cancer reduced by apple consumption included (percentage reduction in brackets);

• oral cavity and pharynx (18%)
• oesophagus (22%)
• colorectal (30%)
• larynx (41%)
• breast (24%)
• ovary (24%)
• prostate (7%)

I’ve long held the view that the rising levels of peanut allergy are probably due to underlying contaminants in the peanuts, or alternatively, disturbances of the immune system from other causes (possibly antibiotic or vaccination effects).

2 things support the peanut contamination view;

1)      One of my clients has immediate anaphylaxis to peanuts, yet absolutely no reaction to organic peanuts.   There are only 2 peanut species in the world, with a constituent profile almost exactly the same, so it’s doubtful the type of nut per se is to blame.   While organic peanuts have no pesticides or herbicides, non-organic peanuts may be exposed to over 20 pesticides/herbicides during growth & production, and the types used differ between countries.

2)      A recent journal article proposed the link between glyphosate Herbicide (Roundup) and coeliac disease, showing a strong correlation between the use of glyphosate and increasing levels of coeliac...
